En Créa, épisode 2 : Jean-François Tallio : culture, engagement et émancipation
In this episode of my podcast ‘En Créa,’ I am joined by Jean-François Tallio, an ecology-focused city councillor in Saint-Herblain (near Nantes), as he nears the end of his term. Our conversation begins with a simple question: Is culture merely entertainment, or is it a true engine for social transformation? For Jean-François, it is above all a tool for connection, critical thinking, and collective emancipation.
A journey rooted in popular education:
-
Origins: Originally from Brittany, Jean-François grew up immersed in folk culture, oral tradition, and the working-class life of Chantenay (Nantes).
-
Early engagement: From a young age, his involvement in the Action Catholique des Enfants (ACE) and the Jeunesse Ouvrière Chrétienne (JOC) shaped his commitment to collective action.
Local engagement and field-based culture:
-
Turning point: His time at a Young Workers’ Hostel (Foyer des Jeunes Travailleurs) in Nantes was a pivotal moment in his awareness of social inequality and the role of culture as a lever for emancipation.
-
Community action: He continued his work in Nantes’ neighborhoods and with the Confédération Syndicale des Familles, developing local cultural and community projects deeply rooted in the territory.
A vision: Culture, collective, and emancipation: Throughout this journey, Jean-François Tallio champions a core idea: culture is not an optional extra, but an essential tool for social cohesion and collective construction.
